Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian/American media critic who is also a speech writer. Feminist Frequency is a site with video and an online blog looking at the portrayals of gender roles in pop culture. Anita Sarkeesian has been a journalist, media critic and award-winning feminist for nearly a decade. Feminist Frequency is an educational non-profit website that investigates representations of women in the popular media narratives. Committed to destroying the stereotypes of women that exist in pop media, she is also working on issues related the targeted harassment women and other classes of people online. With a master's in political and social thought at York University Sarkeesian is also a much sought-after public speaker and she has delivered talks at the TEDxWomen XOXO festival as well as at the United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. Interested in issues concerning gender identities and feminisms from the age of 7, she started her website Feminist Frequency in 2009, while still a student at the university. An ambitious woman who wanted to launch a web-series that would examine the gender representation of video games, she was targeted by an internet-based campaign. Her determination was not slowed by the harassment, in fact it only reinforced her drive to become a media critic and feminist. Her many notable contributions in the field of feminists are recognized with numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian has been a journalist for a long time and is the founder of Feminist Frequency. The educational non-profit explores the role of women within the popular culture stories.
